Swim LessonsYMCA Swim Lessons:
The National YMCA Program is taught in all classes in our pools. Each level of the program includes stroke development, safety, water games and personal growth.

Parent/Child
Parent Child 1

Ages 6 months to 2 years
Lesson time: 30 minutes
This parent/child program includes a basic water orientation with the instructor guiding the parent in teaching their child the basic skills of swimming.

Parent Child 2
Ages 2 - 3 1/2 years
Lesson time: 30 minutes This parent child program is structured with emphasis placed on independence and
group learning.

Sunnies
2 to 3 years with parent
Class time:  30 minutes
By Aquatic Director recommendation only!  This advanced Parent/Child class is for children who are comfortable swimming at the Pike 2 level and are not yet 3 years old.

Pre-School Swimming
Ages 3-5 years
• Classes are taught without parent
• Child must be 3 before the first class

Pike 1

Lesson time: 30 minutes
This class is for children with little swimming experience. Skills taught: paddle stroke, water adjustment.

Pike 2
Lesson time: 30 minutes
This class is for children who need little flotation. Skills taught: rhythmic breathing,
swimming without the bubble, back float.

Eel
Lesson time: 30 minutes
Prerequisite: must be able to swim 10 yards without a flotation device.  Skills taught: endurance, independent swimming and back/front float.

Electric Eel
Lesson time:  30 minutes
Prerequisite:  must be able to swim 15 yards on front and back and must be comfortable swimming underwater.  Skills taught:  rhythmic breathing, endurance, rudimentary sidestroke.

Ray

Lesson time: 30 minutes
Prerequisite: must be able to swim 20 yards without a flotation
device with rhythmic breathing. Skills taught: rudimentary front
crawl, treading water and sidestroke.

Stingray
Ages 4 and 5 only
Lesson time:  30 minutes
Prerequisite:  must be able to swim 20 yards of rudimentary front crawl and scull on back.  Skills taught:  front crawl, back crawl, treading water, endurance, and rudimentary elementary sidestroke.

Youth Swim Lessons

Ages 6-13 years

Polliwog I

Lesson time: 30 minutes
This class is for the non-swimmer who cannot
swim 30 feet without a flotation device. Skills taught: rotary breathing, human stroke and
back float. 

Polliwog 2

Lesson time: 30 minutes
Prerequisite: must be able to swim 15 yards and float on back.  Skills taught: rudimentary front crawl, rudimentary sidestroke, back sculling and back float. 




Guppy
Lesson time: 30 minutes
Prerequisite: must be able to swim 20 yards of rudimentary front crawl and scull on back.  Skills taught:  front crawl, sidestroke, back crawl, treading water and floating.

Starfish
6 to 8 years old
Lesson time: 30 minutes
Prerequisite: must be able to swim 25 yards of front crawl, sidestroke and backstroke.  This is a skill class to develop the young swimmer.  Upon completion of this program, swimmers are eligible to participate in the pre-competitive 8 and under program.

Minnow
Lesson time: 45 minutes
Pre-requisite: must be able to swim 50 yards each of front crawl and back crawl and 20 yards of sidestroke. Skills taught: elementary backstroke, breaststroke and endurance.

Fish
Lesson time: 45 minutes
Prerequisite: must be able to swim 50 yards each of front crawl and back crawl and 25 yards of sidestroke and basic breaststroke. Skills taught: the breaststroke and dolphin kick.

Flying Fish
Lesson time: 45 minutes
Prerequisite: must be able to swim 50 yards of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and dolphin kick. Skills taught: butterfly, turns and the individual medley.

Shark
Lesson time: 45 minutes
Prerequisite: must be able to swim 50 yards of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, front crawl. Skills taught: lifesaving skills and endurance. 

Teen Swim Lessons
12 to 16 years old
Beginner and intermediate teens can learn how to swim, improve their skills and build endurance with their peers.
