Meet Mary Rivett
THIS IS MY Y: Mary Rivett
“When I decided to run the Pizza Race for the first time last year, the help, support and encouragement from so many people at the Westfield Area Y helped me keep going and strive to keep focused on self-improvement.“
Several years ago, I became interested in improving my health and turned first to strength training at the Y. Continuously lifting heavier and heavier weights was challenging and occupied my attention for a long time. Encouraged by my success, I wanted to do even more.
One fall, I dieted three times, took five pounds off each time, only to put another five pounds back on. Another time I followed Weight Watchers for a whole year, took off 40 pounds, and put them back on and more. This time, I used portion control – half of what I normally eat. Having a “sweet tooth” I included two cookies to finish both lunch and dinner which proved very effective. I dropped 40 pounds in six months and have kept it off for a year now.
I saw the “Pizza Race” for the first time last year and decided that I would run it in July of 2011. It would seem that all you have to do is pick up one foot after another but there is much more to it. Members, staff and greeters included, thank you so very much for all the attention you have given me.
I especially wish to mention Gary. He was always available to show me how the equipment worked and always reached out to help when the weather was bad. Renee has made encouragement and support an “art form.” And I shall not fail to mention my trainer, Mike, who is so knowledgeable in all aspects of his business from running to training, health and meal planning. I feel fortunate to have met so many good people and look forward to being among them for another year!
